A constable was assaulted and his uniform torn inside a police station in Lucknow on May 29, in an incident that has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about police accountability. Allegations have emerged that the Lucknow police are attempting to suppress the case, as sources indicate that the accused is reportedly the son of an Additional Director General (ADG). The force now faces criticism for allegedly shielding a top officer’s family member.
A case was registered against Jai Prakash Singh, Abhishek Chaudhary, and Sumit Kumar in connection with the assault. All three were granted bail on personal bonds directly from the police station. The incident took place at the police station near KD Singh Babu Stadium, while the FIR was filed by Constable Arjun Chaurasia at the Hazratganj Police Station.
Meanwhile, in another incident, an FIR has been registered against a BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly threatening a Dalit research scholar from Lucknow University over the phone, police said on Tuesday. The complaint was filed late Monday night by Deepak Kannaujia, a research scholar and resident of Turtipar village, at the Ubhaon police station.
According to the complaint, BJP leader and block chief Alok Singh allegedly called Kannaujia on May 21, misbehaved with him, mentally harassed him and threatened to kill him. Singh is reportedly a close relative of Rajya Sabha member Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. The complainant claimed that during the call, Singh said, “Go ahead and record this conversation if you want. I’m not afraid of the administration or the law and order in Uttar Pradesh.”
