Heavy Rain Lashes Parts Of Karnataka, Causes Waterlogging; Yellow Alert In Bengaluru Today

Parts of Karnataka received heavy showers, causing waterlogging on Thursday. IMD predicts more rain for next 4-5 days.

Parts of Karnataka received moderate to heavy showers in several areas on Thursday. The downpour also led to waterlogging at many places make it difficult to travel for commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers for several parts of the state, including in Bengaluru. The IMD has issues red alert for rain in Karnataka on Thursday.

According to IMD forecast, Bengaluru may witness light to moderate rainfall to heavy rain in several areas on Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature hovered around 28 degree Celsius while the minimum settled at 21 degrees as the city experienced showers in several areas.

While extremely heavy rainfall can be expected over coastal Karnataka and adjoining areas like Shivamogga, Chikmangaluru, Belagavi on Friday. The downpour is likely to continue for the next 4-5 days.

A yellow alert has been sounded in Bengaluru and orange alert in coastal Karnataka.

Educational Institutes Shut In Dharwad

The weather department has issued red alert also in some parts of Karnataka, including in Dharwad. In view of the red alert, Dharwad district Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has declared a one-day holiday on Thursday for all Anganwadis, primary and high schools, PU and degree colleges across the district.

On Thursday morning, Dharwad district received torrential rainfall, causing waterlogging in several areas.

The rain activity is being attributed to the southwest monsoon, which had halted for almost two weeks. It has become active again with rains in several parts of Karnataka on Thursday morning. The MeT has issued a seven-day warning for Karnataka, predicting “widespread” rainfall in nearly all districts until June 17.

“Heavy rain with sustained wind (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at one or two places over Ballari, Bengaluru (Rural), Bengaluru (Urban), Chikkaballapura, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Davangere, Hassan and Vijayanagar districts. Moderate rain with sustained wind (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at most places over Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga and Kolar districts,” IMD said.
